Mattress guards are the bar at the foot of the bed that keep your mattress from sliding off the foot of the bed when you raise the head of the bed. While the older mattress guards were flat black metal, the new ones are round chrome and are stronger that the old flat ones.  They are available in several different  styles:

1. Retainer bars that bolts to the top of the base platform.
2. Retainer bars that pushes into plastic liners inserted into holes in the top of the base platform.
3. Retainer bars that snaps into mounting brackets mounted to the top of the base. These are a universal bar for beds with a wood deck.
4. Retainer bars that bolts under the bottom of the base platform (most older beds).
5. Shark Bites - These were used on Select Comfort air mattresses instead of a retainer bar at the foot of the bed.

Listed below are the retainer bars I have access to. I can still order the first four bars but the others are just one or 2 of a kind. I have included measurements so you can check if they fit. The bars don't weigh much but are bulky, so the wider they are and the taller they are, the more it cost to ship them.

19"  Wide  X 6" Tall Lifestyle Slide In Bar

This style of retainer bar is designed to be mounted on the top surface the bed. It is approximately. 19" wide and 6" tall. It slides into plastic grommets that look like giant golf tees with a hole in the middle. Sets of 2 grommets are available to purchase separately.

GROMMETS
(SETS OF 2)

I found a grommet that will work on the lifestyle bases that is less expensive than the original Lifestyle grommets. They also happen to be a great improvement over the original Lifestyle grommet. Instead of being closed at the end, they are open, allowing the retainer bar to slide out the end. There are teeth on the outside of the grommet and they have a split in the end. This split allows the grommet to spread open when the bar is pushed through it and that causes the teeth to bite into the wood, preventing the grommet from being easily pulled out. They operate much like a drywall anchor. They can also be bought individually instead of only in sets.

16"  Wide  X 6" Tall Ergo

This style of retainer bar is designed to be mounted from the top of the bed. They are available in the two sizes above. It has the snap in mounting points. The mounting brackets must be purchased separately. To install, spread the bar apart and slide into the mounting holes from the outside. This is the easiest bar to retrofit onto a bed with a wooden deck.

FLUSH MOUNT MATTRESS RETAINER BAR
FLUSH MOUNT MATTRESS RETAINER BAR
19" WIDE FLUSH MOUNT MATTRESS RETAINER BAR
The biggest complaint about retainer bars is that they are in the way when you are putting the mattress pad and fitted bottom sheet on the bed. They have tried all types of retainer bar configurations, even removing the bar and putting Velcro strips across the deck to snag the mattress. The flush fit retainer bar was another attempt at resolving this problem. It just created another problem, you had to have a mattress with a specially made pocket on the bottom for the bar to slide into. It would be hard to find a mattress with this feature any longer. Like the "Slide In" retainer bar above, the bar is 19" wide and uses the same plastic grommet it slides into. If you replace your mattress and it does not have the flush mount pocket, you can change to the "Slide In" bar above. I have just one of these left.

16"  Wide  X 6" Tall Lifestyle Spread Apart

This style of retainer bar is designed to be mounted from the top of the bed. It mounts 4" in from the end of the bed. It is different from the Ergo retainer bar in that the mounting bracket is recessed into the base. That is why the end of the bar curves down. The mounting brackets must be purchased separately. I do not stock the mounting brackets but can special order them. They cost almost as much as the bar. I have 4 of these available.

If you have a thick mattress that keeps lifting above your current retainer bar it can be retrofitted to your base, as long as it has a wooden deck. You will have to drill holes and install either t-nuts or use a nut and bolt to mount it. It can also be used on the side of the bed, near the top, to keep the mattress from sliding sideways.  I currently only have two of these bars available.

RETAINER BARS FOR THE SIDE OF YOUR BED

Side retainer bars are used to stop the mattress from sliding off the side of the bed. I have two sizes. They are 10 inches wide and either 6" or 10" tall. They have to be mounted on a single piece of wood, they cannot be connected to two differnt pieces of wood. In addition to the bars indicated below, you can use any of the foot retainer bars above if you mount them on the single piece of wood that lifts the head of the mattress. You can put one or two on each side as needed. One at the head and one at the foot. It is not recommended that they be mounted in the middle of the side of the bed as that is where you sit getting in and out of bed and you my sit down on the bar, damaging it.

10" X 4"
This model is 10" wide and 4" tall. They bolt onto the top of the newer model base platforms. They are not tall enough to work on older bases that have the 4 or 5 inch foam layer on top of the wood base platform (K-style bases). They are powder coated in white enamel.

SHARK BITES
Shark Bites is the name for the small plastic disc used by the Select Comfort/Numbers mattress company to hold their mattresses in place. Air mattresses tend to be too light to stay in place well on the bases and have a tendacy to slide sideways when you get in and out of the bed. The shark bites wold go inside the zippered mattress cover. A bolt would go through them, through the fabric and into a T-nut in the base. The original version was just a large plastic disc that was inside the mattress cover. it did not clamp the cover tightly and as a result, the cover fabric would tear over time. The newer part is a two piece part - one on the inside of the fabric and one on the outside. It grips the fabric tightly over a larger area and slows down the tearing of the fabric. They are sold in sets of two.
